GREEN 2 - WEEK 2

MEET & GREET

(2-3 minutes)

Talk to the kids and ask them questions about life outside of the tennis lesson:

- who is your favorite tennis player?

- what is your favorite sport?

- how is school?

- did you play tennis at home?

- do you have any pets?

- what is your favorite food?

etc.

Keep the conversation age appropriate

WARM-UP

(7-8 minutes)

KIDS: THROW & CATCH COORDINATION

Players overhead throw a ball to each other while shuffling from the baseline to the net.

Players should be at an appropriate distance apart for this.

ADULTS: SHORT COURT RALLY

Adult players warm up with light rallying from service line to service line.

Move back to orange court line and continue until fully warmed up.

PLAY - PRACTICE - PLAY

(40 minutes)

STOP TENNIS

(10 minutes)

- split players into teams so they can play each other

- play mini-matches with serves, up to 5 points

- first player to get to 5 points yells 'stop' and round is over

- any player who is ahead gets a point for their team

- if two players are tied, each of them gets one point

Fundamental Teaching Points

- make clear and fair line calls

- teach etiquette

- keep score out loud after each point

GROUNDSTROKE RALLY WITH SELF RALLY

(10 minutes)

- players attempt a consistent rally using self rally 

- self rally from their baseline to the net

- hit friendly shot to partner

Fundamental Teaching Points

- teach correct grip for both sides (f-hand, b-hand)

- teach sideways set up position

- teach contact point (out in front)

- teach recovery to ready position

THROW TO VOLLEY

(10 minutes)

- players work in pairs: cooperation

- underhand throw to the volleyer

- introduce volley as a 'catching station'

Fundamental Teaching Points

- teach continental grip

- teach cross-step on volley

- teach contact point

SERVE PRACTICE WITH FLYING TARGET

(10 minutes)

- one ball in each hand, toss one in the air and throw the second one trying to hit it

- after flying target, pick up racquets for serve practice

- teach sideways set up position

- teach contact point

WRAP-UP

(5-10 minutes)

COURT TAKE-DOWN

- players and coach clean up together

- teach the importance of keeping everything organized

SUMMARIZE & ENCOURAGE

Ask the players questions about the lesson:

- what did we work on today?

- what did you learn today?

- what is your favorite shot?

- tell each player individually what was ONE THING they did great today and hand out Firefly Dollars
